Workshop: "Putting Your Privilege to Work”

“Diversity 5.0 Virtual Conference” hosted by The Society for Diversity.

Session Description:

Starting with the recognition of the increased momentum in the field of diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice this session will outline practical and actionable skills that are necessary to be an agent of change in these times. These skills are utilised by individuals who seek to move past performative allyship and into doing the real work. Taking the stigma out of the words power and privilege, we begin to unpack how we can utilize our various identities to make our environments more inclusive. With a shared understanding of terms, underlying concepts, and evidence-based research; a reframing of these ideas is the basis of this continuing dialogue. A discussion of actions one can make, both big and small, to bring other voices to the table, or better yet, support them in building their own. Finally, learning how to de-centre yourself from the conversation is paramount in becoming an effective ally, and working to flex that muscle is key to being trusted and effective in this work. Whether you're new to this whole ally thing or have been walking the path for a while, everyone at any stage of their journey can benefit from this discussion.

Attendee Outcome:

Attendees will walk away with basic vocabulary and an understanding of the foundational concepts of power and privilege. They will dialogue about how we can turn power and privilege into catalysts for change in the world around us. They will leave with actionable steps that can help guide them in being a more effective ally; they will understand how they can use their privileges for good in the workplace and beyond.
